In the summer of 1978, twenty-one-year-old Paul Wilson jumps at the chance to join two local icons on a dream surf trip to mainland Mexico, unaware their ultimate destination lies in the heart of drug cartel country. Having no earthly idea of where he鈥檒l get the money to pay his share, and determined to prove his mettle, he does the only thing he can think of: He robs a supermarket. And, if karma didn鈥檛 already have enough reason to doom the trip, he soon learns one of his companions is a convicted killer on the run, and the other an unscrupulous cad. Mishap and misfortune rule the days, and mere survival takes precedence over surfing.
Original photographs (including pre-kingpin El Chapo), and Wilson鈥檚 strong narrative style, combine to make this true story personal鈥攊n the tradition of Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer, and Barbarian Days, A Surfing Life by William Finnegan鈥攅xcept this tale had to wait for the statute of limitations to expire before it could be told.

鈥淏ad Karma is one badass piece of work.鈥?lt;em> 鈥?Jan Goode

鈥淗angin with El Chapo. Gujarat. The most westerly state of the Indian Subcontinent. A state of extremes. From the Pakistan border and the bleached bone desolation of the Thar Desert, through the lush jungle of the Sasan Gir National Park, home to the only wild population of the Asiatic Lion to the shores of the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Kutch. It is a leading industrial state, producing 75% of India's salt and the excess power it generates is sold to neighbouring states. While also being home to remains of the 5000-year-old Indus Valley Civilisation. Birthplace and one time base of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi known as The Mahatma-Great Soul. It is one of India's four 'dry' states. Don't book it for your stag do. I know and have met many Gujaratis over time. And I have always had to say that, despite multiple trips to India, I had never visited the state, but it is 'on my list'. So, in the autumn of 2017, I redressed the balance. As always, there was not enough time. We flew into Ahmedabad, the largest city in the state. Ahmedabad sits astride the Sabarmati river, the largest river in the state after which Gandhi's Ashram was named. We moved west to Bhuj, a city ravaged by an earthquake in 2001 and still recovering. We skirted the Gulf of Khambhat to celebrate Diwali in the holy town of Dwarka. Then via Porbandar, Gandhi's bustling coastal birth city, to the city of Junagadh. A former Muslim ruled city whose rulers attempted to make it part of Pakistan despite not sharing a border. And finally to Diu island. Daman and Diu is a union territory and not part of Gujarat. It is governed direct from New Delhi and is not dry. Which you might think is a good thing. Selfie Obsessed is an informative and amusing look at Gujarat. Travelling through it, eating in it. Seeing it's sights and meeting it's varied populace. India is a country like no other. It can wow you and build you up before knocking you down with a couple of kicks for good measure. But you are soon back up and being wowed again. Gujarat is an amazing state in an amazing country. Visit it here, then go see it for yourself.

Fans of Katie Fforde, Carole Matthews, Victoria Connelly or Erica James 鈥?and everyone who enjoyed Nick Alexander鈥檚 The French House 鈥?will love Fiona Valpy.

Five weddings. The perfect venue. One little hitch鈥?lt;/b>

Leaving the grey skies of home behind to transform a crumbling French Ch芒teau into a boutique wedding venue is a huge leap of faith for Sara. She and fianc茅 Gavin sink their life savings into the beautiful Ch芒teau Bellevue 鈥?set under blue skies and surrounded by vineyards in the heart of Bordeaux.

After months of hard work, the dream starts to become a reality 鈥?until Gavin walks out halfway through their first season. Overnight, Sara is left very much alone with the prospect of losing everything.

With her own heart breaking, Sara has five weddings before the end of the season to turn the business around and rescue her dreams. With the help of the locals and a little French courage, can she save Ch芒teau Bellevue before the summer is over?

What people are saying about The French for Always

鈥楾his was set in the gorgeous French countryside which, itself, was another character in the novel, I honestly felt like I was there drinking in the sunshine, the atmosphere and the wine! The description in this book was just beautiful full on wonderful metaphorical language and adjectives that tasted wonderful in the mouth!

Overall this novel would be a lovely summer read, you will feel the heat emanating off the page and so will definitely put you in the mood for barbecues and a glass of wine or two alfresco. This is a stand along novel, so if you haven't read anything from this author before, it would be a great introduction to her lovely writing!鈥? 4/5 Fabulous Book Fiend

鈥?lt;b>I fell in love with this novel as soon as I had read the first few pages. I am a sucker for any story that in one way or another has to do with weddings, but I have to admit, I鈥檓 not a particular fan of France. Yet, the descriptions of Chateau Bellevue, the surroundings, the small village and its inhabitants... I loved it and the whole atmosphere in the novel immediately made it feel like summer, even though it was raining where I was! The main character, Sara, was easily likeable and I felt myself rooting for her and her wedding business, especially after her fianc茅 Gavin decides to leave her and she suddenly has to set up the business on her own. Luckily, Sara is surrounded by a great cast of supporting characters, including the trustworthy Karen and handsome and charming Thomas.

The storyline, which revolves around Sara and her attempts to save Chateau Bellevue, was really enjoyable, especially because of the five weddings that are organised at the venue while the story enfolds. Each of the weddings featured a specific couple, all of them different from one another with their own background. Fiona Valpy鈥檚 writing is great; well-paced, detailed, and captivating, and I definitely look forward to reading more of her work in the future. 鈥楾he French for Always鈥?is a wonderfully warm and thoroughly enjoyable read, and definitely the book to pick up if you are looking for your first taste of summer!鈥?9.5/10 Spoonful of Happy Endings
